Shocking news : Malayalam Directors have started reading again....!

nikhimenon@gmail.com

Long ago, much before the era of Bhootams and Jackies, we had movies based on popular novels and short stories. But  since our directors started treating books as 'potential sources of infection', (one director had even confessed recently that he hated visiting public libraries  coz of Swine flu scare!)those type of movies have become extinct.

The good news is that some of the  mainstream movie makers have finally  dared to think beyond Udaya Krishnans and Benny P nayarambalams.(who are currently the highest paid script writers of the state with movies like CID Moosa ,Lollypop,Chotta Mumbai to their credit). Two movies which are in the post production stage are based on popular malayalam novels. They are Renjith's Palery Manikyam Oru pathira Kolapathakathinte Kadha and Dileep-S.kumar team's Swa.Le.

Paalery Manikyam is a novel by T.P.Rajeevan ,the noted malayalam writer who actually wrote the english version of this novel first (titled 'A Mid Night Murder story').It's about a 22 year old lady named Manikyam who was found dead 50 years ago in a small village called palery near kozhikode.(I had read this novel a couple of weeks back and i must say i enjoyed reading it).

The second one, Swa.le is based on a short story by kalavoor ravikumar (who gave us earlier 'Ishtam') titled 'Dead Line'.Set in the early ninetees, the movie should be a pleasant experience to the viewers unlike the hero's last solo release 'Moss and Cat'.

Hope both the movies come out good unlike the reel version of 'Sunil Parameswaran's Anantha Bhadram, which was a not so great cinematic experience....!

A positive change... from Hollywood movie DVD's to Malayalam literature..

Only a few like Adoor and Shyamaprasad were depending on books for inspiration..

Heard in an interview that
B Unnikrishnan intends to make a movie based on N S Madhavan's 'Thiruththu' .. Also, a few of the short films that make up Ranjith's "Kerala Cafe'" are based on published works..

I hope Paleri Maanikyam won't be too glamorized bcoz of the M-factor.

@vivek,

ananthabadram was technically good, t had great cinematography and art direction and good music too..but since i had read the novel, the movie was a let down for me.coz there were continuity errors, the script was also mediocre....for instance , in the novel, the character played by Biju menon in the movie is the one who saves anandhan in the end.

if yu read the novel and go for the movie, i am sure that you will get disppointed big time..

Can u pls let us knw the guys name?

"lal jose's puram kaazchakal based on V.K. Sreeman's story"

"Puram Kaazhchakal" is a novel written by CV Sreeraman. Anyway, who is VK Sreeman? Being a good follower of Malayalam literature, I feel ashamed that I hv never heard that name. There's a Malayalam actor-writer named as VK Sreeraman. But he has nothing to do with this film or novel.

As I already warned u, be more responsible in wht u publish. This is just like loose talk dr...

error regretted.....

i donno if i have the right to comment on this topic.. cos' the no. of mallu movies i've seen are a very few.. but given the benefit of reading some good books which went to become movies in Mollywood i guess i could ;)...

Ananthabadhram was a good movie in technical aspects.. The cinematography was excellent.. I agree to the fact that continuity was missing in the movie.. Also Prithviraj's acting was too amaterish (mind that.. i'm a hard core fan of Raju chettan)..but still Manoj and Kalabavan mani were the saving spirits IMO.

Coming to scripts based on novels, I thoroughly liked shyamaprasad's "Akale" an adaptation from Tennesse Williams's 'Glass Menagerie'.. I guess the director did maximum justifications to the novel on which he based his movie..Even his "Ritu" seems to be good.. waiting to watch it..

With more of telugu action (:P err.. gravity defying action :))flicks being dubbed to malayalam.. i guess the directors are trying to mimic their counterparts from tollywood and kollywood.. and that leaves us with just a few directors who rely on good scripts.. unfortunately they don't get good takers.. But this is should change and thereby atleast 'fomulaic' film making which is in vogue now would be out..
