Book Review : First Lie Wins

I picked this one up to read expecting it to be a psychological thriller, but I was pleasantly surprised to find that it was more of a heist–spy–con thriller, and reads almost like a Sidney Sheldon novel.

Evie Porter has everything a nice Southern girl could want: a doting boyfriend (Ryan Sumner), a big house with a white picket fence, and a tight group of friends. But there is a catch—Evie Porter doesn’t exist. Evie Porter is a fake identity assumed by Luca Marino, who is a con artist, shifting jobs and identities every couple of months. The novel begins at a point where Luca (who is working under the “Evie Porter” alias) is confronted by a woman who introduces herself as “Luca,” the con artist’s true identity.

Alternating between Evie’s present and her past escapades, First Lie Wins is a roller-coaster ride and will pleasantly surprise you with its twists and turns.

It starts off slow and takes its own sweet time to hook you in, but once you are in, I must say, there is no looking back. I particularly liked the flashback portions, which reminded me a lot of Tracey Whitney (from If Tomorrow Comes) and her escapades.

There aren’t too many characters in this novel apart from Evie, Ryan, and Smith (Evie’s boss), but that doesn’t make it predictable. Evie’s partners in crime—Matt, Devon, and George—have their own parts to play in this cat-and-mouse game between Evie and her boss, and I genuinely didn’t see that twist towards the end coming.

The climax reveal was a bit predictable, but the tail-end portions more than made up for it.

On the whole, this one is a twisty, suspenseful ride, and I really enjoyed it!
