Book Review: Theory Of Murder by Anish Francis

Now, don’t get me wrong. This one is not yet another addition to the endless assembly line of Malayalam thrillers with cheesy English Titles that are getting released in plenty. This book, published by Saikatham, is, in fact, a compilation of short stories by Anish Francis with a hired assassin as its protagonist.

Beautifully written with splendid twists, Aneesh’s stories also have a literary quality. While ‘Oru Ghaathakante Library Dinangal’ tries to draw parallels between MT’s Manju and Yasunari Kawabata’s Snow Country, ‘Kottayam Kumali Town to Town’ has references to Marquez. Similarly, Francis’s attention to detail is also spot on. To his credit, he hasn’t gone after cheap thrills at the cost of a coherent narrative.

The eight stories in this compilation are all refreshingly fresh and make for a good read. If enjoyable, racy short stories with a little bit of literariness and a slight twist are your thing, give this book a try. You won’t be disappointed!

I am giving this one a 3 out of 5.
